Over the summer months of last year, we were fortunate enough to be able to spend 2 months in the beautiful region of the north of Spain. More specifically, one month in the Basque region and one month in the Cantabria region. It was a fantastic break from all the 40+ degree heat in Malta, we could still actually hike ! In July, we stayed in the picturesque San Sebastian, and had plenty of time to discover the best coffee places in the regions (which were all within relative (~1h ish) walking distance!). Below, you can find our top 7 dog-friendly places based on food, coffee, and being welcoming to Rodrigo !
This was my favorite option which we came across on the second day. It was claimed as the best coffee in town, and it did indeed match the expectations set. They have specialty coffee that leaves you yearning for a second one, not to mention the food options, which are simple but bursting with flavor. My personal favorite was the avocado bread with Jamon on top, which gets me drooling just thinking about it. The staff and the owner are also very nice and friendly. This place does get very busy, however, so expect some wait time.
After exhausting quite a few options found on Google Maps, I came across this option which was a little further away. The place lives up to its name, with very tasty healthy food options. More specifically, as I write this, I clearly remember the savory sort-of-pancake filled with avocado and salmon that I had, and that I desperately crave right now! The coffee was also good and strong, and they had lots of smoothie and juice options too.
We came across this one by chance when we were walking past, and were attracted by the setup of the place. We were a little reluctant simply because there were at least 7 people before us waiting in line, and we were not sure if we wanted to wait so long, but in the end, it was all well worth it. The food options are fantastic. Breakfast and Brunch healthy options with a little bit of a twist too from the others we have seen. Lots of delicious and healthy smoothie options as well. I have not tried the coffee here, but it did look great !
This place offered specialty coffee, great food options, and bakery items. What else do you need? It was about 15 15-minute walk from our place, so we frequently visited, whether to work a little bit from there or treat ourselves to a Turkish eggs breakfast and a specialty coffee! Even if it rains, you can sit outside under the umbrella if you are adventurous enough, but inside is also nice and cozy. Staff are also very nice and friendly !
What attracted us here the most were the food options, with the delicious avocado and jamon that is a must to try, but also the vast range of fruit bowls (they even had a dragon fruit one??), healthy options, and bakery snacks. The coffee was also pretty great, and it's nice to sit outside on a warm day or inside if the weather is not so appealing.
We met a few people from couch surfing here and it was fantastic to sit outside in the sun, sipping our coffee ! We all opted to get a snack from their freshly baked options, more specifically, the croissant filled with Jamon, Rucola and Avocado, and it surely did not disapoint ! But they also had lots of other options to choose from, and the coffee was pretty good too! P.s the inside also has really cute and cozy seating.
7. Trikua
The food options did not disappoint, especially the Jamon and Avocado which I keep mentioning over and over again. I hope you get the point that it is a must try wherever you go. The bread was super fresh and there's options for someone who has more of a sweet tooth too. The coffee was good, but not the best we've had.
Bonus : Koh Tao
This place had cool and chill vibes, which made it a perfect spot to work from. They also have kombucha which we did not really find in other places. The food options are quite limited and simple, but tasty just the same.
To Conclude
There are many more dog-friendly coffee options in San Sebastian of course, but these were definitely the top ones that we kept finding ourselves revisiting. Some other coffee shops did not quite understand the concept of a cappucino, or perhaps it was simply a translation error. You can also find other recommendations such as restaurants and hikes in San Sebastian on the WagsUnite app. Let us know which coffee shop was your favorite, and if we've missed any other good ones so we can make sure to add them too!
